Rep. Jay Xiong Statement on Pig's Eye Landfill Taskforce vote

Wednesday, August 17, 2022

ST. PAUL – On August 16, the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) approved the work plan for the Pig’s Eye Landfill Task Force, which was included in the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF) appropriations bill. The final vote was 15-0. The purpose of the task force is to coordinate efforts to remediate and restore the Pig's Eye Landfill Superfund site and address perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination of Battle Creek, Pig's Eye Lake, and nearby groundwater.

State Rep. Jay Xiong (DFL – St. Paul) authored the legislation, and released the following statement:

“This is about equity. This area has the misfortune of being one of the oldest dump sites in our state's history. From the Mississippi River at Fort Snelling to Wakan Tipi and Pig's Eye, this area has been crucial to our history and sacred to the civilizations which have come before us. We must begin to clean up this place and improve it for both the environment's sake as well as for the sake of our human health. I want to thank Chair Hansen, Chair Lee, and my local community for their constant support on this issue.”

The LCCMR is made up of 17 members: 5 Senators, 5 Representatives, 5 citizens appointed by the governor, 1 citizen appointed by the Senate, and 1 citizen appointed by the House.
