Start of Session & Gun Violence Prevention

Tuesday, February 25, 2020

Dear Neighbors,

Legislators have returned to St. Paul for the 2020 legislative session. It’s a new year, but our shared values that guide my work at the Capitol haven’t changed. Whether it’s fully funded full service community schools, single payer health care, gun violence prevention, recognizing housing as a human right, climate justice, or immigration and criminal justice reform, these are the priorities I will continue to fight for.

If you have a personal story, idea, or question related to business at the State Capitol, please get in touch. You can find my full contact information online at www.house.mn/62B and connect with me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/RepAishaGomez. If you have a friend, neighbor, or relative who wants to receive updates about the Legislature, let them know they can subscribe to my email list here.

Move Minnesota District Meeting
Last Friday, I joined Representative Hassan and Move Minnesota at Mercado Central to discuss how we can fight for equitable modes of transit. We know that there are a lot of folks in our communities who are transit dependent, that people of color, indigenous people are more likely to be transit dependent. This is a racial justice and equity issue, and it’s an environmental justice issue. It was great to speak with so many of you, and I’ll continue advocating for significant improvements to our transit systems.

Gun Violence Prevention
We need to take action to put an end to America’s epidemic of senseless gun violence and mass shootings. Last session I supported legislation that passed the House which would expand criminal background checks on all gun sales and establish extreme risk protection orders. I plan to push for this legislation again this session. Our community deserves to be free from the fear that reckless carry and shoot first policies create. It’s time that Senate Republicans follow the House DFL’s lead and pass this legislation which would make all of Minnesota a safer place to live. I’ll be sure to update you if there are any new developments regarding gun violence prevention at the Capitol.

The 2020 Census
In March and April of this year, the U.S. Census Bureau will mail information to nearly every home about the 2020 Census. The census provides critical data that directly impacts our community’s representation and federal funding that supports hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources. It’s important that you and your household are accurately counted, and that you respond online, by mail, or by phone.

If you watch for the census materials in the mail and fill it out and return it when you receive it, then you do not need to answer the door to a Census Field Employee. By law, information they collect cannot be shared with anyone, including land lords, social workers, law enforcement, or employers. More information is available at www.bit.ly/36skM1n.
