Legislative Update- New Laws Begin July 1

Thursday, June 27, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

I hope you’re enjoying the summer! With July right around the corner, I thought you might be interested in checking out new laws that go into effect on the first of the month. You can find them here. One new law in particular I’d like to highlight is the creation of the new opioid advisory council, which will establish goals and help identify strategies for opiate addiction, prevention, and treatment. To fund these initiatives, Big Pharma will be held accountable with new registration fees. Wage theft penalties will also be increased next month.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has begun its educational outreach across the state in advance of the new ‘Hands-Free’ cell phone law, which goes into effect on August 1. Not sure what’s allowed under the new law? You can find a list of frequently asked questions from the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety here

Upcoming Community Events

Freedom Days

The 53rd Annual Apple Valley Freedom Days officially kicks off today! There are several free, family-friendly events going on this weekend including a fun run, junior golf classic, car show, music in the park, and of course, fireworks! I’ll be marching in the parade on the 4th of July and hope to see you there! You can find the event details here.

Save the Date-Coffee with John

I hope you can join me for my next ‘Coffee with John’ community gathering at Morning Glory’s next Saturday, July 6 at 10:00 a.m. It’ll be a chance to voice your input and share ideas about how we can keep moving our community forward. I’d love to see you there!

Keep in Touch

Please continue to reach out with any questions, feedback, or to let me know how I can be of assistance. It’s always great to hear from you.

Have a happy and safe Fourth of July!

Sincerely,
John
