Legislative Update- March 2, 2020

Monday, March 2, 2020
Rep. Bierman

Dear Neighbors,

We’re having another busy week at the Capitol. Here’s an update from St. Paul:

Insulin Update

The Alec Smith Insulin Affordability Act has made its way through all necessary committee stops and passed in the full House of Representatives with my support last week. Minnesotans shouldn’t lose their lives because they can’t afford the lifesaving medications they need. It’s time for the pharmaceutical industries and manufacturers to help fund a solution for the problem they not only created but are profiting from each year.

Gun Violence Prevention

Last week, the House passed two common-sense measures to address the gun violence epidemic; the first would require criminal background checks for firearm purchases, and the other would enact extreme risk protection orders, or ‘red flag’ laws to keep guns out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves or others. Minnesotans have been loud and clear they want their Legislature to act. I was glad to support these bills and I hope the Senate will consider taking up these needed, common sense reforms quickly.

Action on Climate Change

Over the course of the legislative recess, I’ve held community coffee gatherings, town hall meetings, and issue-based conversations in our region. Residents in the district have repeatedly asked for actionable steps we can take to address the effects of climate change. Many of you have also reached out via email or phone to share your input.

I’m pleased to share the House Climate Action Caucus, of which I’m a member, has announced a bold package of legislation inspired by what we have heard from our communities statewide. The investments we’re proposing will enable Minnesotans to participate directly in solutions that address the climate crisis.

Energy Bill Receives a Hearing

I presented one of my bills last week in the Energy and Climate Finance and Policy Committee. It promotes transparency from utilities by requiring them to post electricity rates online so consumers can see how their bills are calculated. I’ll continue to advocate for its advancement.
