Special Session Recap

Monday, June 22, 2020

I hope you all had a nice Father's Day and were able to enjoy some of the nice weather we had.

Last week, the House advanced a critical public safety reform package that was championed by members of the MN House People of Color and Indigenous Caucus, and crafted with input from law enforcement, county attorneys, community members, mental health advocates, and autism advocates. Unfortunately, the Senate majority chose to adjourn sine die--legislative language that essentially means until the Governor calls another special session--early Saturday morning, rather than remain at the table to continue to negotiate agreements on public safety reform, Federal aid to cities, a bonding bill, and a handful of other measures.

I am committed to continuing to work alongside my colleagues in the House and Senate to advance the proposals that Minnesotans rightfully expect the legislature to pass. However, we will not be able to pass legislation until Gov. Walz calls another special session of the legislature.

I believe, as many of our community members have expressed to me, that now is a pivotal time in our state at which the legislature needs to be working to address the challenges Minnesotans are facing.

In the mean time, I continue to respond directly to emails from folks in our district who are seeking assistance with unemployment, navigating difficulties with Driver and Vehicle Services, and all other matters that come about. Please know I am always here to listen to and serve you.

Sincerely,

Hunter E. Cantrell
