Halloween is here, which means that of course the weather is getting colder, and Minnesota's Cold Weather Rule has taken effect again. The cold weather rule helps protect Minnesotans who struggle to afford their heating bill from having it shut off between October 15 and April 15. More information about that here.

A Diverse Energy Economy

Last week, I attended my first ceremonial bill signing with Governor Tim Walz, who signed my bill to encourage all Minnesota utilities to increase the diversity of their workforce and suppliers to support more female-owned, minority-owned, veteran-owned and small business enterprises. A diversified workforce and supplier pool is necessary for a competitive and sustainable economy and this bill will be a big step in the diversifying the energy industry!

Background Checks and Red Flag Laws 

The Star Tribune just conducted a poll that found broad consensus on how Minnesotans feel about background checks and red flag laws. It's not easy to find something 84% of Minnesotans agree on. When it comes to saving lives, there's no excuse for ignoring that consensus. Minnesotans want common sense measures like background checks and red flag laws so they can feel safe in public and at home

Open Enrollment - Mark your Calendar! 

Open enrollment (starting Nov. 1) is your chance to change health care plans or enroll in a new plan through the MNsure marketplace—the only place where you can qualify for financial help in the form of monthly tax credits. Go to MNsure.org to compare plans and get ready for open enrollment! 

Community Events

I had a chance recently to meet with community members about the persistent disparities in school discipline in Minnesota. We need community based responses to address the disparities impacting Black, Indigenous, and disabled students.

I also got to speak with women in our community about the critical role doulas and community health workers can play in addressing disparities in maternal child health.

The League of Women Voters and Do Good Roseville hosted an inspirational panel on women's representation in government. I was honored to join the conversation. 

Minnesota Values Project
