Update: "Hands Free" and Wage Theft Laws to Take Effect

Monday, July 29, 2019

Neighbors,

I hope you're having a safe and relaxing summer! I wanted to let you know that several new laws are going to take effect on August 1. Here's the full list of all the new laws, and below is a description of the new "hands free" law and nursing home resident protections.

Hands-Free Driving
States that have passed hands free while driving laws have already seen major decreases in traffic fatalities. This law will help keep all of us safe from distracted drivers by making sure people are focusing on the road and not their phones - but make sure you know all there is to know. Here's a helpful fact sheet from the Department of Public Safety, and some tips for a smooth transition to driving hands-free.

Protecting Seniors
Seniors and vulnerable adults will be protected against retaliation by assisted living facility employees if they report abuse or neglect under a new law. This regulatory framework will provide seniors with the safety and security they deserve.

Preventing Wage Theft
There are employers in Minnesota who refuse to pay for overtime hours or skim money off the top of workers' paychecks. Minnesotans deserve every dollar they've earned, and our bill to increase enforcement of wage theft will take effect at the beginning of the month.

I was honored to be among the legislators selected to visit Germany for a renewable energy seminar focused on Germany's transition to a clean economy and how to best transition to a renewable energy future!

Property Tax/Renters Refund Reminder
Friendly reminder to apply for your property or renters tax refund, which is due by August 15. Many homeowners and renters are eligible, but forget to file. Check your eligibility and read instructions at the Minnesota Department of Revenue’s website.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or input, especially as we adjust to the new laws taking place. I appreciate hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Ruth Richardson
