Happy Thanksgiving!

Wednesday, November 23, 2022

Dear Community Members,

I hope you are well! Now that the election is over, my office will start sending legislative updates to keep you up to date with the upcoming 2023 Session. To recap on the election and what is in store for the upcoming Session I wanted to cover a few logistics. With the last election, the DFL secured majorities in the Minnesota House of Representatives, Senate and Governor Walz won re-election. A break down of the majority / minority split is below:

  • House: 134 members, 70 DFL/ 64 Republican.
  • Senate: 67 members, 34 DFL / 33 Republican.

Next year is a budget year. Our State operates on a two year budget or a biennium. Budget proposals will come from Minnesota Management and & Budget and the Governor, and appropriation bills will make their way through the legislature that will ultimately be negotiated and passed to meet the needs of our State. Policy work usually happens in the second year of the biennium. That said, very little was passed last Session and there is a great deal of work in the policy area that will need to be passed this Session as well.

Session Starts on Tuesday, January 3, 2023. The last day of Session will be on Monday, May 22, 2023. The legislature is limited to 120 legislative days as defined by law and the Minnesota Constitution unless a Special Session is called.

I have begun preparing legislation for the upcoming Session. If there is an issue or law that you would like to discuss - please contact me or my assistant Dan Dodge at dan.dodge@house.mn.gov  to set up a meeting. I am always grateful to hear from constituents!

Happy Thanksgiving

I hope you and your loved ones have a very happy Thanksgiving! Even though there is a lot of strife in the world, there is still a lot to be grateful for, including our fantastic community. Safe travels and be sure to eat lots of delicious food!
