Legislative Update- New Laws Take Effect July 1

Friday, June 28, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

With summer in full swing, I hope you’ve been able to soak up the season with family and friends. I’ve been enjoying being out and about in Plymouth, connecting with neighbors, friends, and community leaders.

Wonderful to be with 300+ in Plymouth for the Happy Birthday America parade. Thank you Parks and Rec and volunteers for a fun event for our community!

New Laws Begin July 1

Starting on July 1, many new laws go into effect, including the compromise budget bills we approved with the Senate and Governor. The House’s nonpartisan Public Information Office has put together a helpful press releaseto highlight the new changes. You can also find a detailed list of the new laws on the House website here.

SCOTUS Decision on Gerrymandering

Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling on two landmark redistricting cases, Rucho v. Common Cause and Lamone v. Benisek set a concerning precedent allowing the federal government to take zero responsibility in addressing the harmful and prevalent practice of gerrymandering. It’s an understatement to say this is a disservice to a fair democratic process the American people deserve. Despite the 5-4 vote of the Court, the good news is the Minnesota Legislature can set clear standards that put people before partisan or special interests. You can read about my legislative plan to ensure fair and honest elections moving forward here.

Music in Plymouth

One of my favorite community events is taking place next week! The 47th annual Music in Plymouth is happening next Tuesday, July 2, at the Hilde Performance Center. This is a longstanding tradition I love to take in with my family. You can find an event schedule and information about free shuttles here.

Keep in Touch

Please contact me anytime with ideas or questions. Don’t hesitate to let me know how I can be of assistance to you and your family. I appreciate hearing from you.
