Town Hall Meeting on January 28

Friday, January 17, 2020

Dear Neighbors,

Here’s a reminder about the upcoming Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, January 28 I’m hosting with Sen. Jason Isaacson and Rep. Jamie Becker-Finn. We will meet at the Ramsey County Library – Shoreview from 7-8:30 p.m. Everyone in the community is welcome to attend and we look forward to your questions and input as we prepare for the 2020 legislative session, which starts February 11.

Mass Shooting Prevention

A pair of Minnesota professors, Jillian Peterson from Hamline University and James Densley from Metro State, have conducted research as part of the Violence Project to develop a comprehensive database of mass shooting events. From this, there’s a great deal to learn about to dispel myths, identify patterns and commonalities, and ultimately prevent future tragedies. Today the professors are holding a training session in Saint Paul. The Star Tribune highlighted the professors’ work here.

Additionally, I remain committed to enacting common-sense policy solutions like expanded criminal background checks and “red flag” laws to help ensure all Minnesotans can be safe in their communities.

Be Heard on Cannabis

At the 2019 Minnesota State Fair, House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler launched the “Be Heard on Cannabis” initiative. He’s held several community conversations in every corner of the state aimed at getting Minnesotans involved in the discussion about potential legalization of cannabis for adult use. One is scheduled for the North Metro on Monday, January 27 at 7 p.m. at the New Brighton Community Center. No matter your perspective on the topic, I hope you will join us.

Legislative Forum on Disability

I recently attended this forum hosted by the Minnesota Council on Disability to hear some of the concerns of people who have disabilities. We heard about a wide range of topics that must be addressed in order to ensure that all Minnesotans are treated with dignity, respect, and equality. Many of these concerns are similar to those I’ve heard while touring group homes and talking to people in our community. Last session, I successfully introduced legislation that allowed family members more options in caring for their loved ones with disabilities. In the upcoming session, I plan on introducing more legislation to address concerns that have been raised by disability advocates.

State Settlements with CenturyLink and Comcast/Xfinity

On January 8, Attorney General Keith Ellison announced the state of Minnesota had reached an $8.9 million settlement with telecom giant CenturyLink. Attorney General Ellison followed that up this week by announcing a settlement with Comcast.

Under the terms of the settlements, Minnesotans can be eligible for refunds. To start the reimbursement process, submit your information to the Attorney General’s office here if you’re a CenturyLink customer, and here if you’re a Comcast customer. Companies operating in the state of Minnesota have a responsibility to do so in a fair, transparent, and reputable fashion. In each of these cases, the companies fell short of this expectation and I’m pleased Minnesotans will see relief as a result of the Attorney General’s work.

Presidential Primary

This year, Minnesotans will select candidates for President in a primary election. No matter your party affiliation, it's important to cast your vote and help ensure our government is representative of our shared values.

Absentee voting is available starting today, January 17, meaning Minnesotans can be among the first in the nation to cast their votes. You can request a ballot to be mailed to you or update your voter registration here. The Secretary of State’s office has answers to a number of frequently asked questions about the new process available here
