Legislative Update - September 13, 2019

Friday, September 13, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

I hope this email finds you well as the weather transitions from summer to fall. Aside from the temperatures, the surest sign of the seasonal change is a return to school for Minnesota’s students. It’s abundantly clear to me how much Minnesotans value having quality schools for our children, and how critical an excellent education is to our young people’s success. I hope all students in our community have an excellent school year.

This year, state lawmakers passed a budget that makes new investments to every student in every public school -- because that’s what Minnesotans asked us to do. There’s more to do, though, including work to reduce disparities, increase services for students with disabilities, increase access to early learning, and expand key support services, like those from counselors, social workers, and psychologists. I remain committed to advocating for a world-class education for all Minnesota students.

Capitol Tours During MEA

One of the most rewarding things about serving our community at the State Capitol is getting to work in the Capitol building itself. If it’s been a while since you’ve visited, I’d encourage you to do so. A four-year restoration concluded in 2017 with artwork retouched with superb attention to detail, additional public spaces, technology upgrades, and improved accessibility so all Minnesotans can enjoy “the People’s House.”

I’m pleased to announce that on Thursday, October 17 (during MEA week) we will have two behind-the-scenes tours of the State Capitol available for students and families in our community, starting at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. During the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to go on the House Floor and head up to the Quadriga (golden horses). Due to limited space, RSVP's are required and the slots will be filled on a first-come basis.

Those students and families interested in attending must RSVP by emailing Kyle Smith (Kyle.Smith@house.mn) by October 3rd.  Please provide the following information:

1) Whether they want to come at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m.
2) Name and number attending
3) Address
4) Phone number

We will follow-up with the meeting location. I hope you’re able to join us.

Suicide Prevention Month

September is Suicide Prevention Month. Since joining the Minnesota House, I've been meeting with agencies, nonprofits, and individuals about services and gaps in our state related to mental health. In October I'll be attending a national conference about suicide prevention.

#BeThe1To is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s message for this month and beyond, with actions we can all take to prevent suicide. There are five action steps to take if you’re communicating with someone who may be suicidal: ask; keep them safe; be there; help them connect; and follow up.

There is help available. The Lifeline provides free, confidential support for people in distress 24 hours a day. Don’t hesitate to call 1-800-273-8255 if you or someone you know is in crisis. Other resources are available courtesy of NAMI Minnesota. Together, we can prevent the tragedy and heartbreak caused by suicide.

Save the Date: Criminal Justice Forum

As a member of the House Public Safety and Judiciary Committees, in addition to my experience as a prosecutor, I’ve been committed to supporting thoughtful reforms in our criminal justice system. Too often, the focus is squarely on punishment, and not enough on accountability, rehabilitation, or improved outcomes in our country, state, and communities.

Wednesday night, October 16, at the Shoreview Library (4560 Victoria St N), I’ll be hosting a forum to examine what can be done better, and discuss strategies we can implement to see the best results for everyone affected by our criminal justice system. All are welcome to attend. I’ll have more detailed information soon.

Let’s Stay Connected/Office Hours

While the Legislature isn’t in session, I remain committed to making myself accessible to the community. During the interim, I host office hours every Wednesday and am available to meet at the Capitol, in the district, or on the phone. To schedule a meeting, please call my office at 651-296-0141.

It’s an honor to represent you at the Capitol.

Sincerely,

Kelly Moller
State Representative
