Legislative Update - Redistricting Begins

Friday, August 27, 2021

Dear neighbors,

The legislature officially began the redistricting process last week! Minnesota goes through redistricting every 10 years, after the U.S. Census is conducted. Using the latest Census data, legislators work together to draw new political maps that reflect how the state’s population has changed over the past decade. That means redrawing eight congressional districts, 67 state senate districts, and 134 state house districts. At the end of the process, each one must contain about the same number of residents as other districts of the same kind. The new maps should also reflect Minnesota’s geographic, ethnic, geographic, and economic diversity.

The House Redistricting Committee met last week to review Census data and discuss the important work ahead. Over the next few weeks, the bipartisan group will hear from Minnesotans from each of our eight congressional districts. Residents of the 4th Congressional District shared input on Wednesday, and people from the 6th Congressional District will have the same opportunity on Monday, September 13. If you’re interested, you can find details here.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update

Ramsey County is hosting a series of vaccine clinics over the next few weeks. You can view a list of dates and locations, as well as the schools and community centers that regularly offer vaccines, on the county’s website.

Ramsey County is also partnering with the Minnesota Department of Health to offer vaccines at the Minnesota State Fair. Fairgoers will be able to get vaccinated at the North End Event Center between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. from August 26 to September 5 and 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. on September 6. The first 3,600 people who get their first dose at the site will immediately receive a $100 Visa gift card.

Mental Health Town Hall

The challenges we’ve faced over the past 18 months highlighted the importance of mental health and having affordable services and support available across Minnesota. On Tuesday, September 14, I’m hosting a town hall to discuss the state of mental health and what can be done to improve it. I’m excited to hear your thoughts and talk with a panel of mental health experts. I hope you can join us at Podvin Park Pavilion!

White Bear Center for the Arts

Like many community members, I’m looking forward to the White Bear Center for the Arts’ grand reopening this fall! WBCA has been closed for several months due to the pandemic and ongoing construction. While they’ve continued to offer a variety of classes, exhibitions, and community events online, it will be nice to have the opportunity to visit and gather with others in-person. Keep an eye out for the activities and events WBCA is hosting when they reopen the week of October 11. You can find more information on whitebeararts.org.

Feel free to share any questions, ideas, or feedback you have. You can reach me by email at rep.ami.wazlawik@house.mn or call me at (651) 296-3018.

Sincerely,

Ami Wazlawik
