Legislative Update - Economic Security Legislation

Thursday, May 7, 2020

Dear neighbors,

Today, my colleagues and I will vote on a package of legislation to protect Minnesotans’ economic well-being during and after the current public health crisis. This legislation invests $100 million in housing assistance for renters and homeowners and $55 million in emergency loans for small businesses. It also increases funding for broadband access and telemedicine and wages for personal care assistants (PCAs). You can find more information about this package of legislation here.

House Economic Agenda

I’m looking forward to casting my vote for this bill! If you’d like to follow along, you can watch the House floor session live here at 1:30 p.m.

Pay Protection for Hourly School Workers

Hourly school employees are still working hard to support our students. They’re preparing and delivering meals, caring for the children of essential workers, helping families with distance learning, and more. They deserve to be compensated – especially during this time of economic uncertainty. On Monday, I proudly cast my vote for legislation to ensure that paraprofessionals, nutrition services staff, child care workers, bus drivers, and other hourly school workers get paid through the end of the school year. More information about the bill is available here.

Safe and Secure Elections

My colleagues and I also approved a bipartisan bill to protect the health and safety of election officials and voters. The legislation allows our state to use federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) funds to prepare for increased absentee voting, open new polling locations, purchase sanitation and disinfectant supplies, and expand public outreach. It also includes funding to protect our election system from hacking and foreign interference. You can read more about this legislation here.

Safely Resuming Elective Surgeries

Starting next week, hospitals, clinics, and surgical centers that create a plan to keep patients and healthcare workers safe can begin performing elective surgeries again. On Tuesday, Governor Walz issued an executive order to allow doctors, dentists, and veterinarians to resume procedures that can keep Minnesotans healthy and improve their quality of life. You can read the executive order here.
