Fighting climate change and investing in our community

Friday, November 15, 2019

Rep. Wazlawik

Dear neighbors,

I hope you’re staying warm! As temperatures continue to drop, I want to make sure you’re aware of Minnesota’s Cold Weather Rule. Unfortunately, for many people colder weather means struggling to afford their heating bill. The Cold Weather Rule helps protect Minnesotans from having their heat shut off during the winter months. Protection is available from October 15 to April 15. There are also energy assistance programs that help renters and homeowners pay for heating costs and furnace repairs.

More information about the Cold Weather Rule is available here. You can read more about the Energy Assistance Program here. Please share this information with family, friends, and neighbors and remember to watch out for one another this winter.

Climate Action Caucus Community Conversations

The Climate Action Caucus, which I’m proud to be a part of, is inviting Minnesotans to help create a bold, comprehensive plan to combat climate change. We’re hosting a series of community conversations so legislators, experts, and residents can share ideas and discuss potential solutions. Our latest conversation was about housing issues. We had a fascinating discussion about creating new opportunities for homeowners and renters to conserve energy. We also talked about making homes as energy efficient as possible, updating existing buildings, and supporting affordable housing.

Our next community conversation is dedicated to public health. You can find more details and sign up for updates here. Helpful tips for making your home more energy efficient are available here.

Improving Local Roads and Infrastructure

On Wednesday, I met with members of the House Capital Investment Committee. I advocated for local infrastructure projects, including an I-35E interchange and improvements along County Road J. Investing in these needed upgrades would benefit our community and the entire state.

Over the past several weeks, the Capital Investment Committee has traveled throughout the state to learn more about infrastructure needs. They’ve spoken with locals; attended presentations; and toured aging buildings, wastewater treatment plants, parks and trails, and more. When the Legislature reconvenes, they’ll decide which proposals should receive an extra boost of state investment. I’ll continue working with elected officials in our area and at the Legislature to earn support for projects in our community!
