Legislative Update - September 6, 2019

Friday, September 6, 2019

Dear neighbors,

I hope you had a great Labor Day weekend! Labor Day is an opportunity to celebrate generations of workers who fought for the 40-hour work week, workplace safety laws, collective bargaining rights, and so many other policies that now benefit many of us. It reminds us that we must keep fighting to preserve and expand these hard-won rights.

Thanks to the advocacy and persistence of workers, my colleagues and I passed the strongest wage theft prevention and enforcement law in the country this year. I look forward to working on paid family and medical leave and other pro-worker policies in the coming session.

Minnesota State Fair

I had a great time at the Minnesota State Fair last week! I particularly enjoyed talking with folks at the House of Representatives booth. Many thanks to those of you who stopped by to visit and take the annual poll. Here are some of the notable results:

The full results of the informal poll are available here.

St. Anthony Falls Laboratory Tour

Yesterday I had the opportunity to tour the University of Minnesota’s St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL), a cross-disciplinary research facility located right on the Mississippi River. The researchers at SAFL are doing fascinating work. They’re working on designing more efficient wind turbines, mapping wave energy and shoreline habitats to enable habitat restoration projects and increase natural fish reproduction in Minnesota lakes, addressing soil contamination caused by road salt, collaborating with the Raptor Center to make wind turbines safer for eagles, and much more. I had a great time learning about their groundbreaking research.

White Bear Township Day

White Bear Township Day is just around the corner. This free annual event is a great opportunity to spend time with friends and neighbors. There will be live music, kid’s activities, fireworks, and more. I hope to see you there!

When: Saturday, September 14 from 2 – 8 p.m.
Where: Polar Lakes Park, 1280 Hammond Road, White Bear Township, MN 55110

Back to School

Thousands of Minnesotans went back to school this week! Best wishes to all the students and parents starting a new school year, and thank you to the teachers, paras, and staff who put their hearts into making sure that our students are safe, happy, and successful.

Have a great school year!

Sincerely,

Ami Wazlawik
State Representative
