Legislative Update- March 19, 2021

I hope this email finds you well on this last official day of winter. Committee deadlines are upon us at the legislature, which help legislators narrow the focus on which priority bills will continue to move forward.

The pace hasn’t slowed, and our work continues. Read more news from the Capitol below:

Vaccine Update

This week, Minnesota surpassed 2 million vaccines. Overall, the pace of vaccine distribution continues to increase. While it took more than two months for the state to administer the first million doses, it took less than one month to administer the second million doses. If you haven’t done so yet, please sign up for the COVID-19 Vaccine Connector to be connected with vaccine opportunities when you are eligible. In some cases, your employer will have more information on vaccine availability, and it’s a good idea to be in touch with your health care provider too.

Champlin residents can utilize Hennepin County’s newly launched online registration system. County residents may now register for the county’s public health clinics. Register here and you'll be contacted if an appointment becomes available and you are eligible.

Tax Filing Update

Following the IRS, the Minnesota Department of Revenue has announced a grace period for taxpayers filing their 2020 Minnesota Individual Income Tax Return. Minnesotans now have until May 17 to file their payments and returns. This tax season, please visit the Minnesota Department of Revenue’s website with information on their resources, including COVID-19 relief available for businesses, and sign up for updates.

Legislation Update

This week, in the House Commerce Committee, which I chair, we heard a bill that would address catalytic converter theft, which continues to be on the rise. The measure would allow only licensed scrap metal dealers to buy used catalytic converters from repair shops, auto recyclers or vehicle owners who provide proof of ownership. This takes the quick cash out of the equation for criminals who attempt to profit from the theft.

Next week, my bill to protect Minnesotans against excessive consumer pricing on essential consumer goods and services will be up on the House Floor. Minnesotans deserve to be protected from bad actors looking to take advantage of tragedy, and I’m looking forward to advancing this measure forward.

The Hometown Heroes Act is gaining traction across the state! This is the bill that would deliver vital state health assistance to Minnesota’s 22,000 firefighters. They deserve to access the care needed to handle cardiac disease, emotional trauma, or cancer diagnosis. As a grateful citizen and co-author of this bill, I'll continue to advocate for our firefighters.
