Legislative Update- New Laws Begin July 1

Monday, June 29, 2020

Rep. Bahner

Dear Neighbors,

Last week, Governor Walz announced a plan to deliver $841 million in federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding to Minnesota’s cities, counties, and towns. Under the formula, our communities of Maple Grove and Osseo will receive approximately a combined amount of $5.3 million. Once the Legislative Advisory Commission approves the plan, funds will be distributed on a rolling basis beginning this week.

COVID Small Business Grants-Applications Open

Minnesota’s Small Business Relief Grants Program – created by legislation I helped pass during the special session– has begun accepting applications. The bill created a $62.5 million fund for small business grants up to $10,000, with a focus on businesses with 50 or fewer employees.

Apply today by clicking the link above.

Here is a rundown of the requirements:

  1. Have a permanent physical location in Minnesota,
  2. Be owned by a permanent resident of Minnesota,
  3. Be in good standing with the Secretary of State’s office and the Dept. of Revenue as of March 1, 2020, and
  4. Demonstrate financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Laws go into Effect July 1

As July approaches, several new laws go into effect on the first of the month, including the Alec Smith Insulin Affordability Act. As a vocal champion for this measure and big sister to a diabetic, this anniversary is not one I relish celebrating. I do however want to thank Alec, his parents and the intense courage they brought to bear to make change possible so that we can truly say, “not one more,” and mean it. Thank you, Alec, for lending us your spirit and inspiration.
