First Week of Session

Monday, January 14, 2019

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to represent the communities of District 34A at the State Capitol!

I was officially sworn in last Tuesday, January 8th, and it has been a whirlwind week of learning issues and finding my way around the Capitol!

I was so fortunate to be joined by my family for the first day ceremonies. Below are a few pictures from a truly special day.

Hard at Work: I have a lot to learn and have already been working on bills I hope to introduce in the next few weeks to address issues of concern to our district. I enjoy meeting with constituents and getting to know my colleagues on both sides of the aisle. I hope to work with other members of the Legislature to solve problems and make Minnesota an even better place to live, work, and raise our families.

I am honored to be appointed to serve on the following committees:

  • Health and Human Services Policy Committee
  • Jobs and Economic Development Finance Division, and
  • Judiciary Finance and Civil Law Division.

In addition, I plan to continue to work to defend life, our 2nd amendment freedoms, and fight the DFL majority's plans to increase taxes on hard-working families.

Holding the Line on the DFL Majority: One of the first actions the DFL Majority took on our first day of session was to restructure the committee process in a way that makes it hard for the public to track legislation. Although Republicans voted unanimously against the proposed rule change, this restructure move allows the Democrats to rush bills through the committee process with little or no public notice. This means that Minnesotans who care about a particular bill may not know which committee it is going to or have time to get to the Capitol to testify in support of or against the bills that come up. We need MORE public input, not less, and this aggressive move by the DFL makes the legislative process less transparent. Asked three separate times on the House Floor, the DFL Majority Leader refused to commit to even a 24-hour notice prior to hearings.

How You Can Help: Please call Rep Hortman and ask her to restore transparency to the ways that bills are heard in the House.
