Legislative Update- New Laws Begin July 1

Friday, June 28, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

It’s hard to believe June is almost over! I hope you’ve had a great start to your summer.

I’d like to thank everyone who attended and participated in the June listening sessions I hosted in Chanhassen and Shorewood. We’ve hosted six public listening sessions since I’ve begun my work in St. Paul and I’m looking forward to more this summer! I am so honored to represent our communities and families, and welcome your thoughtful input and ideas. If you couldn’t make it to either event, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office at 651-296-4315  with any questions or thoughts.

As July approaches, you may want to check out the new laws that go into effecton the first of the month. All budget bills will become law. There is a lot to be excited about! Several of my bills will become law, including the ‘Lawns to Legumes’ program and the legislation mandating coverage for 3D mammograms for women at high risk of developing breast cancer. In addition, ISD #276 will receive funding to design and construct additional classroom space to help meet the growing demand for preschool and adult education in our community. Our bipartisan work to get tough on middlemen who drive up the price of medications will go into effect. Efforts to clean up our lakes will be underway with a new law I authored to help combat aquatic invasive species.

I'm also proud of the creation of the new opioid advisory council, which will establish goals and help identify strategies for opiate addiction, prevention, and treatment. To fund these initiatives, opiate manufactures will be held accountable with new registration fees.

Chanhassen 4th of July Parade

The City of Chanhassen is seeking volunteers for the 4th of July festivities from July 2-4. There are a wide range of opportunities! You can find the details and sign-up sheet here. I’ll be marching in the parade downtown on the 4th and hope to see you there!

Save the Date: Listening Sessions- July 17 & August 10

Summer is a busy time for everyone. That’s why I’d like to invite you to save the date for my seventh and eighth community Listening Sessions! We will host a conversation about climate and energy on July 17th at the Shorewood Community Center at 6:30 p.m., and a general listening session on August 10th at the Mound Public Library at 10:00 a.m. I’d love to hear your ideas and would be happy to answer any questions.

Wishing you a happy and safe Fourth of July!

Sincerely,
Kelly
