Legislative Update- January 18, 2019

Friday, January 18, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

The 2019 Minnesota Legislative Session began last week and I am honored to be representing you at the Capitol. I’m committed to serving in a way that reflects our communities’ shared values, and delivering bipartisan solutions to make our state government work efficiently for all Minnesotans.

I’ll be serving on the following House Committees this session: Early Childhood Finance and Policy Division; Environment and Natural Resources Finance Division; and the Water Division. Additionally, I’ve been appointed as the Vice Chair of the Health and Human Services Policy Committee. As a practicing physician, I’m eager to weigh in on affordable and accessible health care options so all Minnesotans can get the quality coverage they deserve. Overall, each of my committee assignments will be vital in addressing the needs of our community.

Minnesota’s economy remains relatively stable and we must exercise caution when we make decisions on investments that have kept our state strong. Nonetheless too many Minnesotans are struggling with health care prices they can’t afford and coverage that’s inadequate. That’s why I support a plan to allow all Minnesotans to access affordable, quality coverage through the MinnesotaCare Buy-In option. I recently discussed this idea on Minnesota Public Radio. You can listen to the segment here at the 24:00 minute mark.

I’m committed to finding common ground on significant issues that need our attention: addressing the opioid crisis, protecting our cherished seniors in assisted living facilities, securing funding for services for people with disabilities, keeping our kids safe in school and ensuring we all get the best value out of our tax dollars – among other issues – should be solved on a bipartisan, consensus basis. I know Minnesotans deserve an accountable state government, and I’ll work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to make progress.

I encourage you to stay connected to and informed of Capitol happenings with the nonpartisan House Public Information Services Office throughout session. Please feel free to share this update with your neighbors and friends, too. You can also follow me on Facebook here.
