Legislative Update - January 16, 2020

Thursday, January 16, 2020

Rep. Wolgamott

Dear Granite City Neighbors,

Quick reminder that tomorrow is the start of this weekend’s Minnesota House Freshman Tour in Saint Cloud! I invited my fellow first-term colleagues, and Speaker Hortman and Majority Leader Winkler, to come see all that Saint Cloud has to offer, as well as gain a better understanding of our community's legislative goals.

tour

We’re going to be stopping at New Flyer of America, the Saint Cloud Correctional Facility, SCSU, the Amtrak Station (and proposed future Northstar Station), and many more that you can read about in the Saint Cloud Times’ coverage of the upcoming tour. Be sure to say hello if you see us around town!

Governor’s Bonding Proposal

Governor Walz recently released his complete list of recommended projects for capital investment, which will serve as a start to the conversation we’ll be having this year as we draft and debate the 2020 Bonding Bill. I’m thankful that Governor Walz recognized the importance of St. Cloud’s Municipal Athletic Complex and included $12.15 million for the expansion and renovation that I championed in his recommendations.

This much-needed investment would revitalize an important resource that brings in people and revenue from across the state. An investment in the MAC is an investment in our entire community, and I look forward to advocating for this project as a member of the House Capital Investment Committee alongside the Governor’s office this legislative session.

Community Events

Thank you to everyone that showed up to our Climate Change and Clean Energy Forum! This is a big issue, but the enthusiasm and determination that folks brought to our event this week reinforced my belief that we can take on climate change if we work together. A special shout out to Rep. Jamie Long for bringing his expertise to the table. You can read about the success of last night’s event here. For more information on our work on this issue at the State Capitol, sign up for our Climate Action Caucus updates here.

Another reminder that our next community event will be the Northstar Town Hall. I’ll be joined by Senator Jerry Relph and representatives from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to provide an update on our efforts to extend the Northstar Commuter Rail to Saint Cloud, and then we’ll spend the rest of the evening taking public input on the project. You can RSVP on our Facebook event page.
