Capitol Newsletter from Rep. John Poston

Friday, February 12, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

It’s been another busy week in St. Paul with committees meeting to discuss and debate bills as they move through the legislative process.

I have heard from many of you that are concerned about school closures. It is no secret that Governor Walz’s move to shut schools has caused considerable academic and social harm to students. Sadly, it appears that an entire generation of students will be impacted by school closures.

With thousands of Minnesota students still in remote learning and school reopening guidance rumored in the coming days from the Walz administration, House Republicans held a news conference Thursday to push for legislation that would empower local school districts to make the best decisions for their districts and remove the Governor's ability to unilaterally keep schools closed.

A similar proposal cleared its first committee stop in the Senate earlier this month and could come up for a vote in the coming weeks.

The science and data show we can safely get our students back in the classroom — even President Biden's Centers for Disease director said multiple times last week that we can safely return to in-person learning before all teachers are vaccinated.

I trust our local school boards, administrators, parents, and teachers to work collaboratively and make decisions that are in the best interest of our communities.

We cannot afford to wait any longer, our students are depending on us to do the right thing for their futures.
