Rep. Haley Legislative Update

Friday, July 12, 2019

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As you know, workforce development is one of my top legislative priorities at the Minnesota House, and I have good news to report on this front.

APPLY NOW FOR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIPS

Over the past two sessions I have authored bills that provide scholarships through the Minnesota Workforce Development program, in order to assist graduating high school students with pursuing a career that is in a high-demand employment sector.

This year, the Legislature approved a $7 million appropriation to the program. These scholarships are targeted to students entering the college in these areas: Agriculture, Early Childhood Education, Health Care, Information Technology, Manufacturing, and Transportation. Examples of such programs at MSC Southeast include Radiography, Auto Body Collision Technology, Mechatronics Technology, and Cyber & Information Security.

This week we learned that MSC Southeast will offer 18 new $2500 scholarships for students who are beginning their college career on campus this fall. The announcement was made at a press conference at Minnesota State College Southeast in Red Wing yesterday.

These scholarships are available at ALL Minnesota State campuses, so I encourage all parents and interested students to look into this great opportunity to support your education and career interests!

The deadline for to apply for the scholarship is August 5, 2019.  Scholarship awards will be announced on August 9, 2019.

ANGEL TAX CREDIT APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED

Legislation I co-authored providing $10 million to Minnesota’s Angel Tax Credit program was also signed into law this year.

According to the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), the Angel Tax Credit program is now part of Launch Minnesota, a new initiative to grow Minnesota’s startup ecosystem. The Angel Tax Credit program provides a 25 percent credit to investors or investment funds that put money into startup companies focused on high technology, new proprietary technology, or a new proprietary product, process or service in specified fields. The Angel Tax Credit stimulates private investments in emerging Minnesota businesses to encourage job creation.

Applications are now being accepted. To learn more about the Angel Tax Credit program, click here.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, Red Wing is hosting a pair of events, including the 11th annual Rolling River Music Festival. The Red Wing Collectors Society is also hosting the Red Wing pottery annual convention, details can be found here.
