COVID-19 Update - November 19, 2020

Thursday, November 19, 2020

Hello Northlanders,

Minnesota is at a critical point in our battle with COVID-19. Cases continue to skyrocket, hospitals are at capacity, and there is a shortage of health care workers. Yesterday, we reached the tragic milestone of 3,000 deaths in Minnesota as a result of COVID.

Governor Walz last night announced a new series of public health measures aimed at getting a hold of the virus’s spread, which is currently out of control throughout our communities. Many of the restrictions are similar to those enacted this past spring. Starting Friday at 11:59 p.m., bars and restaurants will only be open through take-out options, gyms and entertainment venues will close, and we’ll be putting a pause on youth sports.

This graphic highlights exactly why such aggressive action is warranted at this time:

While COVID patients need care, Minnesotans will continue to have other illnesses and accidents requiring attention, too. Minnesota hospitals are quickly approaching capacity within critical care beds, and many providers are experiencing staff shortages.

These new measures are necessary, but we can’t ignore the pain they will cause small businesses. Many of our bars and restaurants have already been working hard to do things the right way to protect employees and patrons, and the new restrictions will undoubtedly be difficult. It’s time for leaders at the federal level to step up and deliver a robust COVID-19 relief package with assistance for businesses, families, and communities. Earlier this week, several of my colleagues and I sent this letter to Washington urging immediate action.

We also need to do everything we can individually as Minnesotans to protect one another and get the virus under control so our small businesses will once again be able to thrive. Please read this bipartisan op-ed I wrote for the International Falls Journal with Republican Rep. Dave Baker of Willmar (a former International Falls resident) urging folks to do their part. Wash your hands often, avoid large gatherings, practice social distancing, and wear a mask around others. Also, if you are experiencing symptoms or have been around someone with COVID-19, please get tested. There are plenty of options for testing, including kits that can be delivered to your home. More information on these is available here.

I know how hard this all is, especially having to avoid gathering with family members on Thanksgiving. Still, nothing is more important than ensuring everyone can be safe and healthy so loved ones can be around for future celebrations.

Please continue to contact me with your feedback and ideas, or if I can ever be of assistance. It’s an honor to represent you.

Sincerely,

Rob Ecklund
State Representative
