RELEASE: Rep. Schultz statement on new state budget projection

Tuesday, May 5, 2020

SAINT PAUL — Today, Minnesota Management and Budget released an updated budget projection showing a projected $2.426 billion deficit in the current biennium. Minnesota currently has $350 million in the state’s cash flow account and $2.359 billion in the budget reserves. State Rep. Jen Schultz (DFL – Duluth) issued the following statement:

“It’s clear that budgeting honestly and responsibly – and building a healthy budget reserve – was the right strategy in recent years. While certainly challenging, the situation we’re in isn’t as bad as it could be as a result of the fiscal leadership of Governor Dayton, Governor Walz, and DFLers in the Legislature.

“The road ahead will be difficult, but as Minnesotans we will determine the future we want to experience as a state. By investing in the economic security of Minnesota families – through priorities like housing assistance, increased wages for PCAs, pay for hourly school workers, small businesses loans, and aid for low-income Minnesotans –  we can emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic in a position to rebound from this crisis and succeed together.”
