I wanted to take a moment this summer to highlight a couple of great young entrepreneurs that have really caught my attention. The Bonnema Sisters, Kaitlyn & Sarah, have been raising chickens for six years. They sell and deliver eggs to customers from Waconia, St. Boni, Minnetrista, Chanhassen, Victoria, and Excelsior. They also sell duck eggs and whole roasting chickens.
The best part: 100% of their profits go to their college funds.
I have been purchasing eggs from them for about a year and these girls are the embodiment of the American Dream. They saw an opportunity, work hard, and are running a successful small business. They get up early to take care of the birds, harvest the eggs, and deliver eggs at night — all while maintaining high GPAs at school. With young leaders like this in our community, the future is bright.

Hands-Free Law
The Hands-Free Law went into effect at the beginning of this month. The new law allows a driver to use their cell phone to make calls, text, listen to music or podcasts and get directions, but only by voice commands or single-touch activation without holding the phone.
At no time may a driver hold the phone in their hand unless it’s to obtain emergency assistance, if there is an immediate threat to life and safety, or when in an authorized emergency vehicle while performing official duties.

Among the other laws that went into effect are EpiPen administration, racially restrictive covenants on property titles, predatory offender penalties, and license plate fee increases. A full list of laws going into effect is available here.
Back To School
The beginning of the school year is right around the corner. As you stock up on school supplies, remember to save your receipts in order to take advantage of Minnesota’s tax credits and subtractions for education expenses. You can check on the Department of Revenue’s website to determine which expenses qualify.
I also would like to wish all the students good luck as schools get started after Labor Day: Good luck, study hard, and have fun doing it!
