LEGISLATIVE UPDATE FROM REP. TIM MILLER - DISTRICT 17-A

Friday, January 15, 2021

Dear friends,

The last few months of chaos in politics and government have only been dwarfed by the last two weeks themselves. In my lifetime, I have never seen anything like it. In my time in the legislature, I have never been so unsettled with what I have witnessed. My promise to you is that I will persevere and work hard to accomplish the charge of my duties I was elected to do to the best of my abilities.

The violence and threat of more toward government will not be condoned by me. I will do my part to lower tensions and work toward a unified people of our great nation and state.  However, that does not mean I do not also stand strong for truth. In recent days, the two have appeared to be placed in opposition to each other. But there can be no peace without truth being pursued and affirmed. My request of you is to also do what you can to bring peace and pursue the truth. Pray that God heal our land and His providence be revealed to us.

I ask for prayer for me, my family, and the other elected officials and their families in our State and Federal Capitols. Many people I know have received very real threats and acts of violence to them and their homes. There is a “cancel culture” mob out there right now that seeks to destroy the lives of anyone who disagrees with them. It does not come from one side. It is showing up from all parts of the political spectrum. This too, cannot and will not be condoned by me.

Despite the chaos, there is still State business I must attend to. I will be serving on three committees this year: Ways and Means, Taxes, and Agriculture. These committees will afford me the ability to be front and center for everything important for my district. There will be a great deal of work, but I am looking forward to it.

This is a budget year, and we will have to figure out a balanced budget with a sizeable but manageable deficit. We will have to find cost savings, but I am confident we can do so without harming essential services of government. In my opinion, occasional deficits, while not great, do afford us the opportunity to look closely at what we are doing, why we are doing it, and ways to trim the fat. This week we began committee hearings, but the agendas were mostly getting caught up on the situation in each subject matter. The sleeves get rolled up after Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

I will be working in St. Paul with a fairly regular schedule, considering a very irregular year. My typical schedule will include me in my St. Paul office from Monday through Thursdays and time set aside on Fridays for work in my district. Under normal conditions I meet with constituents and advocacy groups a great deal in St. Paul. This year that has been replaced with Zoom and phone calls. As your State Representative it remains a priority of mine to be accessible to you.

God bless.
