REP. MILLER: LET PARENTS SUPPORT THEIR KIDS

Wednesday, October 7, 2020

St. Paul – Yesterday, Rep. Tim Miller (Republican-Prinsburg) sent a letter to the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) regarding their fan attendance policies for sporting events. That letter is attached. Specifically, Rep. Miller requested that the MSHSL allow parents to attend their children’s high school sports activities.

“The Minnesota State High School League needs to figure this situation out immediately,” said Rep. Miller. “Currently, the MSHSL has barred parents from watching their own children play volleyball and other sports. Moreover, MSHSL policies regarding parental attendance are wildly inconsistent from sport to sport. This is unacceptable and needs to be corrected. Parents should be allowed to attend their children’s sporting events without question.”

Rep. Miller also called on the Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Department of Education to work with the MSHSL in providing reasonable, safe accommodations in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Enough with the excuses,” said Rep. Miller. “I am tired of the MSHSL, the department of health, and the department of education hiding behind ‘protocol’ and ‘guidelines.’ Churches, grocery stores, and other places have moved heaven and earth to adapt. The MSHSL needs to do the same. If they cannot, then they need to produce the documents which demonstrate why they are unable to open sporting events to parents. Frankly, the MSHSL would not exist without the athletes and families that participate. It’s time the MSHSL start treating families with the respect they deserve.”

Additionally, Rep. Miller has set up a petition regarding this issue. The link to the petition is here: https://www.newhousegop.com/gameon

Rep. Miller concluded, “I am not asking that sporting events be opened to unlimited amounts of people. On the contrary, my request is very minimal. I just want parents to be able to support their children at sporting events. That’s all. If people think that is an unreasonable request, then I suggest they go take a class on what it means to be human.”
