LEGISLATIVE UPDATE FROM REP. TIM MILLER - DISTRICT 17-A

Monday, March 2, 2020

Hello, friends! It’s a new week, and I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on some of the recent activities here at the Minnesota State Capitol.

Miller Time tonight @ 7:00 pm

Join Representative Miller tonight, March 2 at 7:00pm on his YouTube Live show Miller Time. This week he will be discussing the details of the two gun control bills passed by the House HF8 and HF9 and how you can do something to fight back against these two efforts to take guns away from law abiding citizens. Protecting the 2nd Amendment

On Thursday, February 27th, the Minnesota House of Representatives met to vote on two bills which would increase gun control in Minnesota. The first bill, H.F. 8, mandates universal background checks on every transfer or sale of every firearm. The second bill, H. F. 9, institutes a “Red Flag Law” in Minnesota. A red flag law allows law enforcement to strip law-abiding citizens of their firearms without due process. Furthermore, H.F. 9 eschews the fundamental constitutional principle of innocent until proven guilty.

One of the principle issues with the red flag law is that it puts law enforcement officers in harm’s way. The red flag law would require sheriff’s deputies to confiscate firearms from armed individuals who are unaware that law enforcement is permitted to confiscate their firearms. These confiscation situations have the potential to become volatile and dangerous. As a matter of fact, the enforcement of red flag laws in different states has resulted in accidents and deaths.

Unlike my colleagues who voted for those bills, I believe in the Second Amendment. Law-abiding Americans are guaranteed the right to protect themselves and their families. Both of these bills would severely damage our ability to defend ourselves and maintain our freedom. As such, I voted against both of these bills.

Rep. Miller - ImageBonding Project

Earlier last week, Sen. Lang and I met with city officials from Lake Lillian, MN to discuss necessary road, water, and sewer improvements over the next couple of years. As I have said before, bonding money should only be used for critical infrastructure projects. The Lake Lillian bonding project provides the city with needed drainage and storm water infrastructure. As such, Sen. Lang and I have submitted a bonding bill to fund approximately $850,000 of the $12 million project.
