Please remember to thank a veteran for their service as we celebrate Veterans Day on Monday.

Dear Neighbor,

Rifle deer hunting season opens bright and early Saturday morning. Good luck and please be safe. Last week, an issue surfaced when Waste Management of Minnesota refused to service the DNR CWD Zone 604 check stations despite holding the state contract for handling garbage disposal for the state facilities in our area.

Thanks to a small local waste hauler, AAA Roll-Off Services based at Sebeka, material collected at all DNR CWD Zone 604 check stations will be hauled to the Crow Wing County landfill for disposal in their incinerator.

A big thank you to Crow Wing County and AAA Roll-Off for supporting the special deer carcass disposal regulations that apply to CWD Management Zone 604. For more info visit this link.

I also submitted letters to the governor on this matter asking he examine the basis for awarding the exclusive waste disposal contract for state facilities in 51of Minnesota’s 87 counties to a single company. Additionally, I recommended the governor consider sanctioning the company as a result of their refusal to support Minnesota’s effort to combat CWD.

Tuesday, I attended the monthly meeting of the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail Association. The association is actively working with the counties, cities and DNR involved in developing the next segments of this state trail. The trail will ultimately connect the Paul Bunyan State Trail at Brainerd to Aitkin, via the Crosby-Ironton and Deerwood area.

Thursday, I participated in a Disability Forum at the Heartwood Center at Crosby. This was an outstanding opportunity to learn firsthand about the impact of brain injury from individuals and families in our community.

Members of the local support group shared their personal stories including providing recommendations on how we can better support individuals that are dealing with brain injury related disabilities. Both the Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance and Minnesota Stroke Association make referrals to local support groups throughout the state.

Please visit Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance website or call (800) 669-6442, or visit the Minnesota Stroke Association website or call (763) 553-0088 for the latest information on how to connect with a local support group.

A special thanks to fellow veteran Russ Philstrom, a member of the Minnesota Stroke Association Board of Directors for his hard work in this area.

Sincerely,

Dale
