Dear Neighbors,
Our state and nation have been horrified at the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. This should have never happened. Law enforcement can only be effective in communities when there is trust between neighbors and those sworn to protect and serve. We must face the undeniable reality that the trust between communities of color and many agencies is broken. As lawmakers, we must urgently address the issue of racial justice as it relates to law enforcement and strengthen justice and accountability. I agree with Governor Walz that we will likely only have one chance to get this right. History will either look back on us proudly for seizing the moment to enact transformational change, or look back on us for failing to act and allowing the status quo to prevail yet again.

We will be joined by a number of local leaders including: Greater Mankato Diversity Council Executive Director Bukata Hayes; City of Mankato Director of Public Safety Amy Vokal; Mankato Mayor Najwa Massad; and former Mankato State Student Association President Anisa Omar. Assistant DFL Leader Jeff Hayden of Minneapolis will also join the conversation.
