Dear Neighbors,

Minnesota’s 2019 Legislative Session officially began January 8 as I was sworn into office along with 133 other state representatives during a ceremony at the State Capitol. It is both humbling and exciting to have the privilege of representing roughly 40,000 people with differing backgrounds and ideas. Once again, I look forward to the challenge.

I had the good fortune to be joined by an Albert Lea student at the swearing-in ceremony. Abbi Patten is a home-schooled high school junior who is also active in Youth in Government. She was my floor guest and I was so happy to have her visit the Minnesota House on this special day!

With the first day activities now behind us, lawmakers are now ready to tackle our state’s most pressing issues. Most of my work during the first months of session will take place in House committees. For the next two years I will serve on the Capital Investment Division as well as the Education Finance Division and Education Policy Committee.

One point worth mentioning: since my arrival in the Minnesota House I have always served on an agriculture committee. Ag is a major economic driver in our area and I have always enjoyed finding solutions for farmers and doing my best to promote the industry. While I’d hoped to continue this service, I can’t this session because our new DFL House majority reduced the number of ag committees. While I am extremely disappointed in this decision, know that I will look for other ways to make our agricultural voices heard in the Minnesota House.

This week, KAAL-TV traveled to the Capitol and asked for my thoughts on the 2019 Legislative Session. To watch the interview, please click here.

As always, I look forward to hearing your legislative questions, concerns, and ideas. You can reach me any time at 651-296-8216 or by email at rep.peggy.bennett@house.mn.

Have a good weekend,

Peggy
