Legislative Update from Rep. Jeff Backer

Friday, November 22, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

I was in St. Paul yesterday for some meetings and took the time to record a video update for this week’s newsletter. In the video, I recap some of the issues that have been plaguing the Department of Human Services (DHS) this summer and fall. You can watch the video here or by clicking on the photo below.

Insulin Options

I’ve heard from a handful of folks in our area regarding affordable insulin options.

Here in Minnesota, the three major insulin manufacturers each have their own, separate programs that offer free insulin to the uninsured. The programs are essentially identical, with each providing free insulin to people who otherwise would have no way of affording their medicine. The manufacturers also have programs that can reduce the costs for individuals enrolled in private insurance.

Additionally, health insurers in the state have taken their own steps to reduce the costs of insulin for enrollees. Starting in 2020, all Minnesotans enrolled in the individual market and many with insurance through an employer will have access to insulin for, at most, a $25 copay.

There are numerous options thanks to these programs and Minnesota’s generous health care programs like Medical Assistance and MNCare.

I encourage folks to consult their doctor or get in touch with their diabetes care team if they have any questions or concerns regarding insulin accessibility. Providers may be able to help bridge short-term insulin gaps if needed.
