Legislative Update – January 15, 2021

Friday, January 15, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

I’m honored to be back at work at the Legislature as the 2021 session started last week. Due to COVID-19 protocols we’re working almost entirely remotely, so it’s a unique way to govern with technology assisting us in our work. No matter if we’re meeting on Zoom or meeting at the Capitol, my commitment to help ensure everyone in our state can have a strong future remains the same.

House Agriculture Committee

This session, I’ve taken on a new role as chair of the House Agriculture Committee. Having grown up on a dairy farm up in Koochiching County, I know all about the hard work and perseverance needed to succeed in agriculture. The industry not only plays a huge role in the state’s economy, but every Minnesotan depends on it to put food on the table. Our farmers have been on a roller coaster ride the past few years, and I hope we can all work together to strengthen the outlook for agriculture.

This week, our committee held our first two meetings to learn a bit about each other as members, hear from industry stakeholders and advocates, and learn about some of the challenges brought on by COVID-19. You can stay up to date with our committee’s work on our website here, and subscribe to the email list here.

Cloquet Fire Hall

As the Cloquet department has grown, the community’s fire hall has become terribly outdated. Last week, I introduced a bill to invest $6.85 million for a new facility to serve the community. I sat down (over Zoom) with John Cardinale of KBJR, which aired a story about the legislation.

Session Priorities

Minnesotans are going through some difficult times as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and as lawmakers, we need to work together to help folks overcome this crisis. Earlier this week, House DFLers announced our first priorities for the session aimed at addressing some of the most urgent needs people are facing. These bills focus on economic security, worker protections, health care and human services, education, and child care. You can read more about this agenda here.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with your viewpoints, feedback, or if I can ever be of assistance. My email address is rep.mike.sundin@house.mn and phone number at the Capitol is 651-296-4308. Feel free to be in touch any time.

Sincerely,

Mike Sundin
