I hope you’re having a wonderful summer. I’ve enjoyed seeing many familiar faces while out and about in the community lately.
New Laws Take Effect
Several new laws took effect on August 1, including legislation that will:
- Make Minnesota roads safer. Under this new law, drivers must remain hands-free if they use a cell phone while behind the wheel. Hands-free laws have reduced accidents and fatalities in other states. A helpful guide with more information and tips for going hands-free is available here.
- Protect elderly and vulnerable adults who live in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. This legislation prohibits retaliating against residents who file complaints.
- Ensure that patients aren’t surprised by high out-of-pocket costs by requiring provider-based clinics to disclose facility fees prior to treatment.
- Protect Minnesotans from the hazards of e-cigarettes. This law prohibits using e-cigarettes in public places. It aims to protect the public and employees from e-cigarette vapors and to decrease youth tobacco use.

White Bear Lake School District Referendum
On Tuesday, November 5, residents of the White Bear Lake Area School District will have the opportunity to vote on a bond referendum. If it’s approved, the referendum will provide funding to help local schools manage increasing enrollment and prepare for continued growth, address building needs and maintenance, improve safety and security, and create flexible learning spaces. Take a few minutes to review the plan at www.isd624.org/Bond2019 and mark the date in your calendar.
MNLA Green Industry Advocate of the Year
I was recently named Green Industry Advocate of the Year by the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA). MNLA presented me with the award in recognition of my commitment to clean water and small businesses, particularly my efforts to help businesses and snow removal companies use less salt. I was honored to receive it, and I look forward to continuing my work on salt reduction and other important issues.
