Legislative Update - January 18, 2019

Friday, January 18, 2019

Dear neighbors,

Thank you to those who joined me last week for two town halls at Century College and Maplewood City Hall. I appreciated hearing from all of you before the first full week of the legislative session. It’s good to be back.

Committees

I’m proud to be the chair of the Water Division this session. It’s the first time that we’ve had this committee, so we’re figuring it out and addressing some issues that didn’t get enough consideration in the past. I’ll also be serving on Environment and Natural Resources Finance, Health and Human Services Policy, and Housing Finance and Policy. You can find more information about these committees and others, including a full hearing schedule, meeting agendas and minutes, and audio and video archives, here.

The Minnesota Zoo gave a great presentation to the Environment and Natural Resources Finance Committee yesterday. Our state zoo helps people connect with unique animals and does a lot to protect our environment.

Housing Event with MICAH

I recently attended a great event hosted by the Metropolitan Interfaith Council on Affordable Housing (MICAH). We discussed affordable housing challenges and how we can take better care of our entry-level policemen and firefighters. You can learn more about MICAH and their mission to ensure everyone has a safe, decent, accessible, and affordable home here.

Income Tax Conformity

Since the end of the 2018 session, the Department of Revenue has updated the tax filing system to accommodate major differences between federal tax laws and Minnesota’s tax code. They’ve done great work to address the major issues for filers this year. As you’re preparing to file your taxes, please consult this list of answers to frequently asked questions provided by the Department of Revenue.
