Hello from the State Capitol,
Our legislature is back in session and our work has begun. Committees are meeting and floor sessions are taking place, although everything is happening remotely. I would prefer being able to attend Capitol activities, but at this point that is not an option. Its my hope we will be able to get back onsite soon, as the earlier we get back to doing things in person, the better we can conduct ourselves in the Legislature.
Republican lawmakers continue to work at bringing the emergency powers decisions back to the legislature, where they belong. Governor Walz has failed to come to the legislature and work with us as the people of Minnesota would expect him to. We are trying to get the governor to relinquish these powers, but there is no support from the DFL. Because the governor has not responded, his one man show towards handling the COVID pandemic continues.
In the meantime, I have been speaking with local chambers of commerce, detailing where they can secure state grants. To me, this is an important part of a legislators work to work with small businesses during these trying times and help them survive.
Also this week, I signed a letter that condemns the violent acts of crime that occurred across our nation last week, including at our nation's Capitol building. I also condemned similar acts that took place in Minneapolis and in cities across the nation last summer and over the last several months.
There is nothing wrong with peacefully protesting. But violence and criminal activity is never right. This is easiest way for me to put it is this: regardless the reason of your outrage, if you hurt others or damage property while expressing it, you should be punished and held accountable.
