Rep. Lesch Appointed to Data Practices Committee

Friday, June 28, 2019

Today Rep. John Lesch (DFL-St. Paul) was appointed to the bipartisan, bicameral Legislative Coordinating Commission (LCC) Subcommittee on Data Practices. Lesch, who also serves as Chair of the House Judiciary and Civil Law Division, is one of only two majority-party legislators in the House to receive an appointment.

“It’s a great honor to be appointed to this committee at a time when policymakers must address how Minnesotans’ personal, private data is increasingly at risk and out of their control,” said Rep. Lesch. “Everyone deserves to have the peace of mind that corporations, hackers, and foreign governments are not using our data for profit or illicit purposes. Perhaps, even more critical, is our oversight of sunshine laws to ensure that local governments follow open government principles.”

The subcommittee is being established as a replacement to the Legislative Commission on Data Practices, which expires June 30, 2019. The subcommittee’s responsibilities include:

-Reviewing and providing the Legislature with research and analysis of emerging issues relating to government data practices and security and privacy of personal data.

-Reviewing and making recommendations on legislative proposals relating to the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act.

-Reviewing and making recommendations on legislative proposals impacting personal data privacy rights, data security, and other related issues.

The Subcommittee on Data Practices consists of eight members that include four senators (two majority caucus and two minority caucus appointments) and four representatives (two majority caucus and two minority caucus appointments). It will expire on January 1, 2021 unless it is renewed by the LCC.
