Legislative Update - May 31, 2020

Sunday, May 31, 2020

Dear Neighbors,

I am hearing so many stories about neighbors looking after neighbors in this time of grief, anger and fear. Some want to use the very real grief and anger over the murder of George Floyd to divide us and break down our society. You are rising above them. I am not surprised but want to thank you anyway.

Tonight will be another night of challenge. It won’t be the last. The Department of Public Safety is pleading with all local communities to NOT be in the streets tonight, for any reason. The safety of all depends on the smart plan for everyone to stay home.

Many of you wrote to me because you wanted Attorney General Keith Ellison to prosecute the case against the four officers involved in George Floyd’s murder. United as one, all ten of Minneapolis’ state Representatives wrote to the Governor asking him to order the Attorney General to lead the prosecution. Our letter is available here. The Star Tribune reports tonight that Attorney General Ellison will be a full partner in the prosecutions. Thank you for insisting on justice.

Stay safe. Continue to be there for each other and, as always, keep in touch.

Jean Wagenius
State Representative
