Legislative Update - October 7, 2019

Monday, October 7, 2019

Rep. Wagenius

Dear neighbors,

I hope you’re enjoying the first weeks of fall. Here’s a brief update from the Capitol:

Mini Session

My colleagues and I want to give all Minnesotans opportunities to share their experiences and participate in the legislative process. That’s why we travel to reach people and communities throughout the state. Last week we held a three-day mini session in southeastern Minnesota. During the mini session, legislators heard testimony from Minnesotans, held public committee meetings, and attended informational tours and presentations.

The House Energy and Climate Finance and Policy Committee, which I chair, highlighted local sustainability initiatives at a public hearing in Rochester. Rochester is a role model for all of us as we seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt in the face of a changing climate. Learning more about their efforts will help us find solutions that meet the unique needs of people and places throughout Minnesota.

Mayor Kim Norton, City of Rochester staff, and Rochester Public Utilities officials shared plans to achieve a sustainable, clean energy future. Members of the public were invited to share their thoughts.

Committee members toured downtown Rochester and the Olmsted County Waste-to-Energy Facility.

While the Legislature won’t officially reconvene until February, the mini session gave us a chance to gather input from Minnesotans and develop a deeper understanding of issues that we hope to tackle next year.
