RELEASE: Energy and Climate Committee Holds Public Hearing on Local Efforts to Combat Climate Change

Thursday, October 3, 2019

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — The House Energy and Climate Finance and Policy Committee held a public hearing at the University of Minnesota Rochester yesterday. The hearing, part of the House’s mini-session in southeastern Minnesota, highlighted local sustainability initiatives.

“Rochester is working hard to achieve a sustainable, clean energy future,” said Rep. Jean Wagenius (DFL – Minneapolis), Chair of the Energy and Climate Committee. “The city is a role model for all of us as we seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt in the face of a changing climate. Rochester can help us find solutions that meet the unique needs of people and places throughout Minnesota.”

Mayor Kim Norton and City of Rochester staff shared plans to expand clean transportation options, encourage sustainable building practices, and reduce energy consumption in existing buildings. Rochester Public Utilities officials discussed adopting more renewable energy sources while ensuring that electricity is reliable and affordable for consumers. Members of the public were also invited to share their thoughts on local sustainability efforts.

The committee also toured downtown Rochester and the Olmsted County Waste-to-Energy Facility.
