Dear Neighbor,

Here’s wishing you and yours a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday as we celebrate our nation’s independence. I look forward to seeing all the patriotism on display at the ever-impressive Erhard parade. If you’ve never attended it, I encourage you to come out and see a great event put on by this town that’s small in size but large in spirit.

The Legislature has adjourned for the year, but a number of laws that were passed during the 2019 session take effect today. Most of these changes relate to finances as we start the new fiscal biennium. Two-year funding packages regarding everything from transportation to public safety, K-12 education and beyond are now on the books. Other topics of new laws include heart screenings and the state’s opiate response.

Click here for an overview of noteworthy changes. In addition, all laws passed by the 2019 Legislature are available at this link.

One thing people have been asking about is when Minnesota’s new law barring hand-held cell phone use while driving takes effect. That law will begin Aug. 1 so, while people are encouraged to be using hands-free methods now, it won’t be state law for another month. This website has more details on how to comply with the change.

Until next time, hope you are having a good summer. Please take extra care outdoors during this hot weather and keep an eye on those who may be most vulnerable to it.

Sincerely,

Bud
