Neighbors and Friends,

The historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) passed by Congress and signed by President Biden has wide-ranging implications for Minnesota in the form of billions in investments in our roads and bridges, rails, clean water and expanded broadband.

Last week the House Capital Investment Committee and the House Transportation Finance and Policy Committee held a joint informational hearing on Minnesota’s transportation provisions within the new law. The committees heard testimony from the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the Metropolitan Council, and the National Conference of State Legislators.

As a member of the Transportation Committee, it was interesting to listen to possible plans for distribution of the federal funds. Minnesota is estimated to receive $4.5 billion for highways, $818 million for public transportation, $302 million for bridges, and $68 million for electric vehicle charging stations. Other important investments from the legislation not related to transportation include $100 million for broadband internet and $680 million for clean water infrastructure. You can watch the hearing here.

I also was interviewed for the Star Tribune about the IIJA. You can read the article here.

COVID-19 Update

As COVID-19 Omicron variant spreads across Minnesota, our public health professionals continue to monitor the situation. Please do your part to ensure everyone has a safe holiday by getting your first or second COVID-19 dose, or the booster shot. And don’t forget to get your annual flu shot.

Municipal Legislative Commission State Representative of the Year

I was honored to receive the Municipal Legislative Commission (MLC) State Representative of the Year award earlier this month. Each year, the MLC selects a legislator who has “gone above and beyond to support our cities’ mission of creating sound public policy.” The plaque says, “With our greatest appreciation for your unwavering support and leadership towards housing affordability in Minnesota.”

Achieving affordable home ownership and providing a safe place for everyone to call home is the result of the efforts of the legislature, governor, and especially the advocates. As chair of the Housing Finance and Policy Committee, the words on the plaque are very meaningful and humbling as I cap my legislative career working toward those goals with so many of you. I thank the MLC for recognizing the work of so many Minnesotans.

Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday!
