Negative impacts on children – incarceration and food insecurity
I attended two events this week that focused on a significant problem of housing, incarceration and food insecurity. The Early Childhood Division and the Corrections Subcommittee met to listen to the impact of incarceration on children and families. Also, this week, the City of Falcon Heights held a Human Rights Day on Food Security and Child Hunger. These are serious issues which carry long-term consequences and we’re likely to hear more this session. You can review the information distributed at the hearing here. Audio can be heard here.
Bring it Home, Minnesota
Housing rental vouchers would be available to anyone to qualifies under legislation that will be introduced this session. We held a news conference this week across from the Drake Hotel in Minneapolis that burned earlier this year, displacing its residents. Read more in the Minnesota Reformer article.
Requiring sprinklers in high-rise buildings
Wednesday morning, several of my colleagues and I held a news conference to talk about legislation to require automatic sprinkler systems in nearly all existing high-rise buildings in response to a fatal fire that killed five people in the Cedar High Apartments late last year.
