Legislative update: November 15, 2019

Friday, November 15, 2019

Neighbors and Friends,

My latest update includes information about fair housing, bonding committee stops, applications for boards and commissions, Open Enrollment, and the high school page program.

A Place for Everyone: a discussion of fair housing for all community members

The current fair housing situation in the region will be discussed at a forum next Tuesday, November 19 at the Roseville Campus of Centennial Methodist Church – 1524 County Rd. C2 W.  Joining me on the panel will be Executive Director of the Minnesota Interagency Council on Homelessness, Cathy ten Broeke, and Director of Ramsey County Veterans Services, Maria Wetherall, who also chairs Heading Home Ramsey, a community-wide partnership seeking to end homelessness for Ramsey County veterans. The forum is free and open to the public.

Bonding committee stops

The Capital Investment committee stopped in the district this week to view several projects. I met with committee members at the International Institute, Gibbs Farm Pathways to Dakota and Pioneer Life expansion and the Minnesota Oval in Roseville. These are worthy projects and I will be advocating for their inclusion in the 2020 bonding bill.

Boards and Commissions applicants sought

Governor Walz and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan are seeking applicants for more than 130 boards, commissions, task forces and advisory councils. You can learn more about the appointments process and opportunities by visiting their website.

Health insurance/ Medicare open enrollment

As I mentioned in last week’s update, open enrollment is here. You have until December 23rd to enroll in a private health insurance plan, renew or make changes to your current non-employer sponsored plan. Visit the MNsure website for more information.  Open enrollment for Medicare ends on December 7, so if you or someone you know needs information, click here.

High School Page Program

One more reminder that applications are now being accepted through Thursday, November 21st, for the High School Page Program. All high school students in their JUNIOR year are invited to apply. The program offers participants a broad range of experiences to help them understand the legislature. For more information on the application process, click here.
