Legislative Update - July 11, 2019 Legislative Process Reform subcommittee meets, hands-free cell phone law takes effect Aug. 1, Blue Book available

Thursday, July 11, 2019

Neighbors and Friends,

Summer is in full swing and I hope you are able to relax and enjoy our seasonable weather. Here is an update from the Capitol:

Subcommittee on Legislative Process Reform

The first interim hearing of the Subcommittee on Legislative Process Reform was held this week.

Last November, the House DFL Majority announced the creation of the subcommittee to provide an opportunity to discuss improving the legislative process. Special Sessions to finish the state budget in odd-numbered years have become the norm and House DFL Leaders believe it is time to take an in-depth look at how the budget process is structured in the regular session and consider any changes.

Hands-Free Driving takes effect Aug. 1

There are just a few more weeks before the hands-free cell phone law goes into effect on August 1st and it’s time to get prepared for the change. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has launched a public awareness campaign and there is also a useful tip sheet that may answer any of your questions.

____________

Blue Book available

Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon has announced the release of the 2019-2020 Blue Book, which is a comprehensive guide to Minnesota’s government, including information on the legislature, executive offices, state agencies, judiciary and local, federal and tribal governments.  Click here to view the book online or here for instructions on how to have a book mailed to you.
