Legislative Update from Rep. Sondra Erickson

Tuesday, January 11, 2022

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I hope you and your family enjoyed the Christmas season and have had a joyful beginning to 2022! Thank you for all your greeting cards and letters; I love seeing how your families grow and change like mine does.

The start of the 2022 legislative session is fast approaching as we lawmakers make final preparations for the beginning of what’s sure to be another busy year.

The biggest issue impacting the 2022 session will be the state’s historic $7.7 billion+ budget surplus. This represents the largest budget surplus in state history, so the debate about what to do with it will dominate the action in St. Paul.

This is a time when hardworking Minnesotans are facing higher costs on nearly every purchase due to record-setting inflation that is soaring under the Biden administration. Therefore, now is the time to deliver historic tax cuts and return the surplus to the citizens of our state.

A specific area that we could target for tax relief is the elimination of state taxes on Social Security. Numerous studies show that Minnesota is among the least tax-friendly states for retirees, so ending the state tax on Social Security would be a way to help our seniors, especially those on fixed incomes.

We also should act quickly to eliminate the tax increase Minnesota businesses recently suffered from increased Unemployment Insurance rates and pay the debt of over one billion dollars taken from the trust fund.

Other areas I expect to be major items during this year’s session include:

  • As the Republican-lead on the Education Policy Committee, I will once again be putting my teaching experience to use as we work to improve our education system. This includes empowering parents to make sure that they have a say in their students’ education and pushing back on radical critical race theory.
  • Supporting law enforcement professionals who risk their lives for us as violent crime continues to skyrocket resulting from violent criminals feeling emboldened by those that support defunding the police.
  • Protecting the rights of the unborn.
  • Standing up for our 2nd Amendment rights.

There will be many, many more as session unfolds and I look forward to continuing my work fighting for the interests and priorities of our communities. If there are any specific issues important to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

2022 March for Life

I invite you to join me Saturday, January 22, for the annual March for Life. As you know, each year Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) sponsors the March for Life on the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decisions Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, which legalized abortion in the United States.

Those who wish to participate in the rally will assemble in front of the Capitol in St. Paul at 12:30pm for a brief program. However, I am sad to report that the capitol will be closed to the public on that day, so I will not host any kind of refreshments after the event.

I hope to see you there!
