Legislative Update- March 2, 2020

Monday, March 2, 2020

Rep. Bernardy

Dear Neighbors,

We had a busy week at the Capitol. Read below for more information about the measures the House passed last week to help keep Minnesotans safe, healthy, and confident their data will be protected in the Presidential Primary.

Insulin Update

It's long past time to ensure that Minnesotans can get the insulin they need at a price they can afford - in emergency situations and long-term. I was proud to vote for the Alec Smith Insulin Affordability Act this week for my constituent Abigail, and all Minnesotans living with diabetes who shouldn’t have to struggle to afford the insulin they need to survive.

Gun Violence Prevention

The House approved legislation last week that would expand criminal background checks on all gun sales and establish extreme risk protection orders. We know we can't stop all acts of senseless violence; we also know that these measures can make a difference — because they are making a difference where they've been enacted in Republican and Democratic-led states.

Despite overwhelming support among Minnesotans and bipartisan support in other states, the Minnesota Senate has yet to take action to help prevent senseless gun violence. I hope they will join us so we can help keep more people safe.

Protecting Your Data in the Presidential Primary

Minnesotans who vote in the state’s presidential primary would be able to opt-out of voter lists sent to major political parties under a bill passed last Wednesday night in the House. The legislation would place restrictions on voter data collected during presidential primaries and levy severe penalties on those who make it public. Minnesota leads the nation in voter turnout. It’s important we stay that way. Your voice matters, no matter your party affiliation. I hope you will vote in the presidential primary on Tuesday, March 3. You can find your polling location here.

Minnesota State Day

It was Minnesota State Day last Tuesday. I enjoyed visiting with the students, faculty, presidents, trustees, chancellor and all the presenters from the various colleges and universities. As the Chair of the Higher Education Finance and Policy Division, it’s important to learn about the work MNSCU is doing to help our students achieve their future endeavors.
