Here’s an update from the Capitol:
Listening to and Learning from Young Minnesotans
Earlier this month, I participated in the Minnesota Student Association (MSA)’s “Cookies and Constituents” event. MSA is the official student government at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. As the House Higher Education Committee Chair, it was a great opportunity to hear directly from the students about their successes, struggles, and general ideas about what we as a state can do to make college completion possible for those who choose higher education as a post-secondary option. The University’s newspaper Minnesota Daily published a story recently that highlights some of our priorities for 2020.
Paraeducator Meeting
Last week, I was pleased we were able to host the House Education Committees in New Brighton for a public listening session for paraeducators, or ‘paras’. These educators work with students with disabilities. We learned more about the issues paras face in the classroom.
Committee members and attendees heard personal testimonies from paras who are juggling multiple jobs and struggling to afford adequate health insurance. We explored issues that included paid prep time, training, better wages, and increased special education funding to help with needed resources. Paras work hard to ensure our students with special needs can thrive and are safe in what can oftentimes be an overwhelming learning environment. I’ll continue to work with my colleagues on solutions for these dedicated professionals who work with some of the most vulnerable among our student population.
