Legislative Update- January 14, 2019

Monday, January 14, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

Happy New Year! I hope you were able to enjoy the holiday season with family, friends and loved ones. 2019 provides us with an opportunity to start anew. Despite having the only split state legislature in the country, I’m confident we can work together in a way that reflects our values to address the needs of our communities across the state.

On Tuesday last week, the 2019 Legislative Session began as lawmakers were sworn-in by former Speaker of the House and current Supreme Court Justice Paul Thissen. Speaker Hortman is the third female Speaker in Minnesota history. The new Legislature is more diverse than ever before. Read more about the increased diversity in the House here. You can also view photos of opening day here.

Among the committee structures and leadership roles assigned last month, I’m pleased to share that I will be serving as the Chair of the Higher Education Finance and Policy Committee, working to find solutions on college affordability, student loan debt relief and expanding post-secondary technical and trade school opportunities. I’m also serving on the following committees: Ways and Means, Transportation Finance & Policy Division, Property and Local Tax Division, and Elections. Additionally, I serve on the Legislative Audit Commission and Regent Candidate Advisory Council.

House DFLers Introduce Minnesota Values Agenda

On Wednesday, the House DFLers unveiled our first ten bills -- the Minnesota Values Agenda. Our agenda focuses largely on making affordable and quality health care a reality for everyone, providing a world-class education for every Minnesotan, improving economic outcomes for families, and ensuring safe and inclusive communities.

More information about the Minnesota Values Agenda can be found here.
